Public and Collaborative – Social interaction in a multicultural society- the course is a collaboration between the INDACO and the DEI departments at Politecnico di Milano. In partnership with the following associations: Naga, Asnada, Intercultura.
INDACO was created within the Politecnico di Milano.
The project
Faced with an ongoing increasing flow of foreigners, Italy encounters profound changes in its cultural identity. This change brings along the need to acknowledge and accept the shift from a culturally heterogeneous society to a multicultural one. Given the intricate aspects of the actual situation the solutions to alleviate the cultural shock and prejudice, have to be found in the understanding of the different sets of values that trigger different perceptions that consequently generate different standpoints. These issues are presented as challenges in the course, the main question asked being how to foster diversity through service design solutions.
In this sense the ICT tools and virtual environment in which they operate can be seen as a valuable opportunity to express the differences and mitigate the cultural clashes - or in other words the misunderstandings and disagreements between two or more cultures.
Academic course
Faculty: Margherita Pillan, Marco Maiocchi (INDACO); Maristella Matera, Alessandro Campi, (DEI) Tutors: Irina Suteu, Marko Radeta, no. of students:89
The aim of the course is to encourage students to design intuitive and accessible digital services that can bridge communication gaps. The final objective is to increase the awareness on both sides (locals and foreigners) and reduce the level of prejudice. An emphasis will be put on the different manners of perceiving the social dynamics and the metaphors used in expressing the problems and proposing solutions.
Several concept digital services will be developed in close collaboration with the academic and NGO partners. The most successful projects, balancing the social and digital interaction aspects will be tested in real settings and eventually prototyped.
